Building Research Institute (ITB)/ Polish Association of EPS Manufacturers (PSPS)

Bartłomiej Papis graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering. Since 2004 associated with the Fire Research Department of the Building Research Institute (ITB). Since 2017, he has been the Head of the Fire Development and Materials Research Laboratory, and since 2019 he has also been the Head of the Fire Research Department and the Fire Research Laboratory of the ITB. In his activities at the ITB, he deals with issues related to the degree of flammability and fire spread of building materials and the testing and evaluation of building materials and products in terms of their reaction to fire. He is a member of standardization committees related to fire safety CEN/TC 127 and PKN/KT 180 and a representative of the ITB Fire Testing Laboratory in the EGOLF organization. During his work at the Institute, he has completed several hundred studies and expert reports on the evaluation of reaction to fire, the degree of flammability, and the spread of fire of construction products. He is the author of dozens of publications in professional and scientific journals.

Key ETICS elements affecting the evaluation of fire spread through exterior walls.

The fire spreading through exterior walls is a significant aspect of a building’s fire safety. The requirements for buildings reflect that importance. For many years, each member country of the European Union has had its own legal and standard regulations in this regard. In Poland, exterior walls are subject to evaluation based on fire spread tests according to the PN-B-02867:2013 standard. Residential fires in Europe have triggered a discussion on tightening the fire safety requirements for these elements. Following this, work has intensified on developing a European method for testing and evaluating fire spread through exterior walls. Whether this is a legitimate and appropriate direction, what the consequences of adopting such an approach may be, and how the abandonment of the national methodology in favour of the European one may change the situation in the construction market in Poland. These are the questions we should answer in the horizon of the coming years.
